ATEX QAN & IECEx QAR
For manufacturers of Ex equipment adhering to the ATEX and/or IECEx scheme, having an appropriate quality assurance system in place is a mandatory requirement. The quality assurance is the continued monitoring of systems and processes related to the manufacturing and management of Ex products. A manufacturer must have both in place (certificate and quality assurance) before putting Ex equipment on the market.
ATEX Quality Assurance Notification (QAN)
In order to be entitled to issue an ATEX product certificate, a manufacturer must hold a valid Quality Assurance Notification (QAN). QAN is issued by a notified body upon continued monitoring of Ex product-related systems and processes at the manufacturer. It involves periodic audits of the production site, manufacturing records, equipment specifications and manufacturing processes, typically every 12÷18 months.
The manufacturer must comply with appropriate Annex(es) of the Directive, depending on the manufactured equipment designation (zone), number of manufactured units, and the presence of an ISO 9001 compliant Quality Management System.
IECEx Quality Assessment Report (QAR)
Similarly to ATEX QAN, it is a legal requirement for manufacturers of IECEx equipment having a corresponding quality assurance, named a Quality Assessment Report (QAR). This ensures full compliance with the requirements of IECEx operational documents while verifying also the presence of an ISO 9001 compliant Quality Management System.
